It's Monday! Welcome, gorgeous women, to WRB's Self Care Week!
A week devoted to talking about self care, what it is, why it's important, and how you can bring self care into your every day to protect yourselves from stress and burnout.
Women Rocking Business's Self Care Week - April 2018
More often than not we don't prioritise ourselves and our own self care, we might think that taking time to focus on ourselves is selfish or self indulgent. So I'd like to begin this week by telling you the story of the hardworking lumberjack:
"Once upon a time, a very strong and hardworking lumberjack asked for a job in a timber merchant and he got it. The pay was really good and so was the working condition. For those reasons, the lumberjack was determined to do his very best.
- Stephen Covey "7 Signs of Highly Effective People"
Our lives are like that, aren't they? Especially as small business owners working hard to making our businesses work. We sometimes get so busy, and life is so hectic, that we don’t take time to stop and sharpen our “axe”.
Whatever life is throwing at you personally, one thing is certain; we all need time to relax, to think and meditate, to learn and grow. If we don’t take time sharpening our “axe”, we will lose our effectiveness, or experience serious symptoms of stress, or burnout.
Have you experienced any of these symptoms below recently? These are seven signs that some proper self care is long overdue:
What if I told you that you do not have to feel this way. That YOU have the ability to help keep yourself happy and healthy. Did you know that we do not need to wait until we are unwell before we take things seriously and use self care to rectify these problems, Self care can and should be used as preventative measure to ease pressure we are feeling on a rolling basis.
“Self-care is never a selfish act—it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have, the gift that I was put on earth to offer to others.” - Parker Palmer
I propose that we prioritise self care in the same way as we prioritise and plan for other daily and weekly tasks. Schedule in time that we dedicate to ourselves.
Sometimes self care can be a bigger thing such as joining a local netball team and committing to play weekly, but it can also be much smaller things such as getting up 10 minutes before the children wake up to have a cup of tea in peace and set an intention for the day, or treating yourself to a Lush bath bomb once a week and really enjoying it, or going for a phone-free walk after lunch. Whatever YOU like to do and that leaves you feeling refreshed and 'sharp' again.
This week I have a number of expert guests lined up, who have each taken the time to write a guest blog for you all. They will each cover a separate area of self care and they will give you lots of food for thought.
But I don't just want you to be a passive listener in all of this! I want for you to embrace the movement and join in! Talk on YOUR Instagram page about self care and what it means to you. Open up the conversation to your followers too. Use the hashtag #wrbselfcarematters to follow the story!
Let's work together to break down the assumptions that self care is selfish, because self care is IMPORTANT, and Self Care Matters!!!!
I can't wait to share this week with you all!
